History of Roulette

Most of us are familiar with the game of Roulette. The wheel goes round and round. The marble eventually settles into a number, and most of us hand over our money to the casino when it turns out that we have lost. Where did this game come from though?

The name itself is quite obviously French. In the French language the word “Roulette” means “small wheel”. This tells us that the French have a very good grip on the obvious, but don’t really say that much about the origin of the game. There are actually a few interesting legends about how the game of roulette came to be.

One of the earliest legends surrounds French mathematician Blaise Pascal. He is known best for inventing the calculating machine in 1642. One of his life’s ambitions was to create a perpetual motion machine. In his attempts to invent such a machine, he engineered a device in a form of the big wheel for his experiments. One of his friends had a good idea to use this device for gambling.

Another story about the discovery of this game tells about Francois Blanc who founded the first casinos in Monte Carlo. According to the myth, he sold a soul to the devil for the secret of roulette. This may or may not be true, but if you add all the numbers on a roulette wheel together the total sum is 666.

Roulette in the form we recognize today came about 1765 in Paris. It was brought to the United States by the French and was part of the first American casino in New Orleans in 1800.

Roulette Strategy

You will find sites all over the internet that guarantee they have a system that will make you a winner in the casino. That should be your first tip that something is not quite right: there is only one real winner in the casino, and that is the casino itself. While they are fun to visit, and it is possible to walk out with more money than you entered holding, it is by far the exception to the norm.

Why then would these people attempt to sell you something that has no chance of working? If there were a system that allowed you to beat the roulette wheel, everyone would know about it and there would be changes made to the game until the advantage once again favored the house.

There are a number of different strategies involving roulette. Some say that betting on sections of the wheel will put the odds in your favor; while it sounds nice, it will not help. There are systems that tell the player to bet differently depending on the number of wins and losses; this isn’t going to help either.

Roulette is a fun game, but it is a game of chance. You’re going to put your money down, and after that the only thing that can work for you is luck. If you’re looking to make money, go to the games that have lower house odds. Another tip for those looking towards their finances is not to spend up to $500 for some mystical roulette system that promises results. Will there be results? Oh yeah. Anger, shock and losing all of your money. Those are the results you will get if you try to use one of the roulette systems.
